This past week at Metro Kidz’ Day Camp we celebrated Christmas in July with games, a birthday party for Jesus, and gifts with Santa. I was so blessed to see the enthusiasm, excitement, and wonder in the kids as we sang Christmas carols, shared the nativity story, and reviewed all aspects of this holy event we celebrate each December. It was hard to imagine snow, icicles on the windows, and decorating Christmas cookies while “roasting” in the summer heat. It appears an oxymoron to celebrate Christmas in the middle of summer, but the message of Christmas is relevant all year long.
Something I was also reminded is that not everyone knows the real meaning of Christmas. As we sang some of our well-known Christmas carols, one little child said, “I don’t know any of these songs.” My heart was stirred to remember that despite all the “hoopla” of the Christmas season, there are many who have not heard the gospel message and have not received the gift of the Savior to their lives. Our message this summer to our children around Detroit is that Jesus came to each one as a child and as children we can give our hearts and lives to Jesus as our gift to Him. The age-old Story maintains a relevant connection for every child in every season of life. When was the last time you shared Christmas in July?
Day Camp– Thank you to all the volunteers and drivers who have graciously offered their time and talents for our day camp. We are still in need of drivers for a couple of day trips. Please see one of the interns (Ninoska, Hannah, or Matt) or me after worship in the dining room area. Thank you also for the donations and food offered. It has been a great asset to our time at the table.
Sizzlin' Summer Sundays– Canceled as of 7/19/11- Starts July 10 and runs each Sunday for the next 4 Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Theme: POWER Zone: The Heart of a Winner. We will be doing sport activities, Bible study, and having lunch together. If your class is willing to prepare lunch on one of the Sundays, please contact Rev. Miles. This is an opportunity to minister to Heart and Soul of our children! (HEART -H is Hope, E is Endurance, A is Actions, R is Respect and T is Trust). August 7 will close out our SSS with a church picnic. Hope to see you there!
J2B– just around the corner (Journey to Bethlehem) –please begin to look ahead for planning this huge Christmas event for our community. (I feel like it has already been this past week, but we all know how quickly December will be here)!
As you enjoy summer, please take the time to enjoy the warmth of the sun and bask in the Son-light!
Blessings to all,
Rev. Cathee Miles
