UMW January 2012 News

United Methodist Women (UMW)

On Saturday, December 17, the women of the UMW wrapped candles for the Moravian Lovefeast, enjoyed a light breakfast, and exchanged simple gifts. It is our time of fellowship which knits us together.

The United Methodist Women vow to be the hands and feet of God. We work on issues which affect the environment and social and racial justice around the world – especially as these issues relate to children. We are interested in not just providing relief, but addressing the systemic issues which create problems. Start the new year by reading Response, the magazine of women in mission. It can be found in the church library. Response is the official magazine of the United Methodist Women. The magazine’s goals are to educate for mission, to interpret the purpose of United Methodist Women, and to strengthen the organization. In the January issue, Harriett Jane Olson, Deputy General Secretary for the Women’s Division, writes: “In this new year let us dream of peace, but also commit ourselves anew to work for peace and declare God’s love for all peoples on earth.”

There are several issues that UMW will focus on this year including immigration reform and the growing number of children living in poverty. Have you read the stories about the growing number of homeless children? The UMW works to help, but also addresses the root causes.

The Metro UMW meets once a month on Saturday at Metropolitan United Methodist Church in Detroit. Can’t make the meetings? Participate in the UMW Reading Program. These books are provocative and encourage women to stay abreast of current issues. We hope that study will lead to action. Please check out the 2012 Reading Program. We will also post the selections on the UMW Bulletin Board. Choose one or more of these books for your book clubs and private reading. Let us know what you read; our unit gets credit for reading these books.

See you at our next meeting on January 14 at 10:00 AM as we plan the 2012 calendar of events and activities. All women are welcome. There is room at the table for everyone.

Loose Change Sunday is January 29, 2012. Keep saving those coins. They will help a local charity.
