Born and raised in Detroit on Mt. Vernon, 2 ½ blocks
from Metropolitan Church and began attending here in 1932. Attended
Fairbanks elementary school at the corner of Seward and Hamilton and then
Hutchins Intermediate at the corner of Woodrow Wilson and Hazelwood until
9th grade and then moved to Highland Park and graduated from H.P. High
School and Jr. College before entering the Navy in 1943. Upon return from
active duty in 1946 attended Central Michigan College and obtained a B.S.
degree in 1948 and immediately came to work for Metropolitan Church as the
Director of Recreation and served in that capacity for 12 ½ years working
with youth and adults. During that tenure, two of the programs that were
developed are still ongoing in the life of Metropolitan, The Golden Hours
Club and the Christmas workshop. Before leaving Metro, a Masters Degree in
Education and a teaching certificate for grades K-12 was obtained and then
taught in the Redford Union schools for three years. Following that was
employed for World Book Educational Corp for 29 years and attained
Divisional Sales Manager for 25 years until retirement in 1991. In 1970
became director of the two youth handbell choirs at Metro and soon
developed a second youth choir and then an adult group, the Epworth Choir.
And has been director of that group for 29 years. Inge, his wife of 52
years, were introduced by the chancel choir director, Dr. F. Dudleigh
Vernor, composer of the Sweetheart of Sigma Chi, when he came to work at
Metro in 1948 and she was his assistant organist and served in that
capacity as assistant organist for 50 years. They were married in June of
1949 and have two married children, Linda and Richard who both live in the
Metropolitan Detroit Area. Hobbies include music, handcrafts and sailing.
They make our home in Southfield and enjoy summering at cottages in
Brighton and Bay View, MI.
